Free law firm SEO audit
This free law firm SEO audit checks your homepage, robots.txt and sitemap for 21 technical basics, then asks eight questions about calls, reviews and tracking that no crawler can see. You get a score out of 100 and the five fixes worth doing first. Nothing is stored, and there's no sign-up.
Enter your website if you’d like the technical scan, answer the eight questions, and press the button. It takes about a minute.

What the site scan checks
The scan reads your homepage, robots.txt, XML sitemap and llms.txt, the same public files a search engine reads first.
All 21 technical checks
- Can it be found? HTTPS, a normal 200 response, no noindex tag, robots.txt present and not blocking Google, an XML sitemap.
- Is it readable? A title of 20 to 65 characters, a meta description of 70 to 170 characters, one H1, a canonical tag, a declared language and at least 300 words on the homepage.
- Does it work on a phone? A viewport tag, a tap-to-call phone link and a form or booking widget on the homepage.
- Does it describe the firm? Readable structured data that marks the firm as a business, alt text on at least 9 in 10 images, and a sharing image.
- Can AI assistants reach it? robots.txt doesn’t block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Blocking them can be a deliberate choice, so the fix says “unless you decided to opt out”.
- Is it quick to download? The page downloads from our server in under 1.5 seconds.
How the score works
The site scan is worth 60 points and your eight answers are worth 40, and each check carries its own weight.
The weights and the rules
The heaviest site checks are the ones that can hide you completely: a noindex tag or a robots.txt that blocks Google (5 points each). The heaviest questions are answering every call and knowing which source brought each client (6 points each).
“Not sure” counts the same as “no”, because a step nobody can confirm usually isn’t happening. If a check can’t run, for example because your robots.txt is missing, it’s left out of the total rather than counted against you. If you skip the website, your score comes from your answers alone.
Your top fixes are the five failed items with the most points, so the list always starts with what matters most.
What this audit can’t see
It checks the basics on one page. It doesn’t tell you where you rank, and it can’t judge whether your content is good.
The limits, in full
- Rankings and traffic. It doesn’t know where you appear in Google or how many people visit. Google Search Console is the place for that.
- Pages beyond the homepage. Practice pages, attorney bios and blog posts aren’t scanned.
- Real-world speed. It times one download from our server, not how fast the page feels on a phone. Run PageSpeed Insights for that.
- Your Google Business Profile and reviews. It takes your word for these. It can’t log in or count reviews.
- Content quality and links. Whether your pages answer clients’ questions well, and who links to you, need a person to judge. Our guide covers what a good law firm marketing plan includes.
- AI answers. Being reachable by AI crawlers isn’t the same as being recommended. Our free AI visibility audit checks what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity actually say about firms like yours.
Who built this
XYR’s founder, William Schneider, built this audit. It runs the first checks we’d make on any firm’s site before a consult. If something in your result doesn’t look right, send it with the form above and he’ll take a look.
Frequently asked questions
Is this law firm SEO audit really free?
Yes. There's no sign-up and no email needed to see your score. You can send your results to William if you'd like a second opinion, but that's optional.
Do you store my website address or my answers?
No. The scan fetches four public files from your site, returns the results to your browser and keeps nothing. Your answers never leave your browser unless you choose to send them.
Why does my score include questions about calls and reviews?
Because search is only half the job. A firm that ranks well but misses calls, or can't tell which source brought its clients, loses most of the value. Those answers are worth 40 of the 100 points.
My score is low. Where should I start?
Start with the first fix in your list. They're ordered by how much each one matters, so the top two or three usually make the biggest difference for the least effort.
